TUC Women's Conference 2025

24 March 2025

The BDA advocates for women in the workplace and beyond

The BDA attended the annual TUC Women’s Conference, held from 5-7 March in London. It was a truly inspiring and empowering event, bringing together passionate individuals dedicated to driving positive change for women in the workplace and beyond.

The TUC Women's Conference highlighted the ongoing need for efforts to address the gender pay gap, tackle workplace sexual harassment, increase female representation in leadership roles, and provide better support for women experiencing menopause at work.

The BDA was represented by Hazel Cheung, England's representative on the BDA Trade Union National Executive Committee (TUNEC), and Annette Mansell-Green, Director of Trade Union and Public Affairs.

At this year’s conference, the BDA moved a motion on domestic abuse and its impact on workplace policies. This motion aims to raise awareness of the effects of domestic abuse and to advocate for stronger policies that support those experiencing abuse. The motion sparked meaningful discussions and highlighted the need for comprehensive workplace policies that protect workers and provide them with the resources and support they need during difficult times.

Women account for 87% of BDA members and they also represent the largest proportion of trade union members across the UK, so that’s why the BDA has a strong voice in the policy-making process at the TUC. By actively participating, the BDA can drive meaningful change for women in the workplace and society, something the association proudly celebrates.

The motions, which were debated at the conference, were successful, with supportive speeches from a wide range of unions. This means they are now adopted as policy for the TUC Women’s Committee to progress within its work programme.

Hazel was a first-time speaker and did a fantastic job representing BDA members in her brilliant speech.

Megan Worrall (Trade Union Secretary) and Julia Chandler (National Employment Relations Officer) attended as visitors. They gained valuable insight from the event, enhancing their understanding of the key issues and discussions shaping policy in the broader trade union movement. This experience will undoubtedly support their work in representing BDA members effectively.

The team also had the opportunity to engage with colleagues from other AHP unions and the broader union movement, which will help with future collaboration.

As part of the BDA Trade Union’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that members' voices are heard, TUC motions will be discussed at the annual BDA Trade Union Reps’ Conference, taking place on Tuesday 3 June. It’s vital to hear directly from BDA Trade Union representatives, empowering them to have a say in the critical discussions that shape policy and make a difference in the workplace.
