Pay talks for NHS workers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland progress

30 Jul 2024

The 2024 NHS Pay Review Body (PRB) report has now been published and the BDA is pleased to see that the government has agreed to implement the recommended 5.5% pay award for Agenda for Change staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The PRB has also recommended that intermediate pay points are added at band 8a and above.

Members will shortly be contacted to consult on the pay offer. It is the recommendation of the BDA Trade Union National Executive Committee (TUNEC) that members accept the offer.

The award will be backdated to 1 April 2024 and we await information on when members will receive it.

The report also makes some observations about the structure of Agenda for Change and the BDA will be working with our sister health unions to examine the details and how best to make any improvements. We will also be raising our expectation that the award is fully funded so as not to have a negative impact on already tight NHS budgets.

The pay announcement came after a long delay and we are pleased that the new government has acted quickly and agreed to implement it in full. The pay setting process, including ensuring that the delays experienced over recent years do not continue in the future, will need to be addressed with the government.

Please note that the pay award for staff in Scotland will be negotiated separately with the Scottish government and we’ll be monitoring and reporting on this in due course.
