The BDA Trade Union are joining fellow health unions to secure better rights for NHS staff in accessing flexible work. Unions recognise that flexible working means that workers are better able to balance their job with responsibilities and interests outside work which can have a big impact on their health and wellbeing.
There is evidence that flexible working in the NHS can help reduce vacancy rates. Furthermore if the NHS wishes to retain their skilled and hardworking staff offering flexible working can help make that happen as there are opportunities to work which previously may not have existed.
Despite the obvious benefits, there’s still resistance from some employers – sometimes due to myths about who flexible working is for, and its perceived impact on individuals and teams. But there are also genuine challenges to deliver flexible working in highly pressured and over-stretched NHS environments where staffing shortages can make filling rotas a daily struggle.
