What is PEN®?

As busy practitioners, maintaining an accurate overview of the evidence base in all general and specialised areas of nutrition and dietetic practice can be a challenge. The Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN®) system is a tool which can support overcoming these challenges.

I am a strong advocate for the promotion and development of PEN as a highly accessible and key professional tool for all dietitians, whatever their current field of practice.

The Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN®) system is a global nutrition and dietetic resource that provides quick online access to the evidence-base on more than 200 nutrition and dietetic-related topics, and translates this into practical information for you.

The PEN® system provides a wealth of benefits including:

  • An online searchable database of more than 200 nutrition and dietetic related topics; accessible to members 24/7.
  • Searching and critically appraising the evidence for you; saving you time.
  • Uses the highest quality research available; so you can provide the best evidence and recommendations.
  • Grades the evidence; so you always know the quality of the evidence being used.
  • Content is reviewed as the evidence changes; ensuring you are kept up-to-date.
  • Provides references to all cited evidence; allowing you to easily access the original journal or research paper.
  • Provides practice-based answers to dietetic and nutrition questions; so you can easily integrate this into your practice.
