Health Education England (HEE), with support from the BDA, have produced a Roadmap to Practice for first contact dietitians and advanced practitioners in primary care. It includes a set of capabilities to ensure safety and consistency for first contact dietitians and advanced practice dietitians in primary care.
The list of education and training courses outlined below include the core modules which are recommended by HEE as essential for those working in Primary Care in England. There are also other courses suggested by the BDA which may support dietitians to meet some of the capabilities outlined in the roadmap.
HCPC (Standards of conduct, performance and ethics 2016 standard 3.3 to 3.5, Standards of proficiency - Dietitians 2013 standard 12 and standards of continuing professional development 2018 all) and the BDA (Code of Professional Conduct 2017 standard 3) outline the requirement for continuous professional development.
In order to support the training and development required to meet the capabilities in the roadmap, the BDA commissioned two members to review education and training for dietitians in primary care:
The table below provides an overview of the training and education available to support these roles.
