Going on Practice-based Learning?

Settings & Types

Practice-based Learning may take place, and is encouraged to do so in both clinical and non-clinical settings. The length of the Practice-based Learning can differ, usually ranging from 2 weeks upwards and can also occur at different stages of a course. Practice-based Learning doesn’t need to be one type, rather they can be a mix of any of the below settings and types.

Practice-based Learning is fundamental for consolidating the clinical skills of the future dietitian. All dietetic specialisms are encouraged to take learners and that ideally learners should be seen in departments throughout the year.

There are a number of different types of Practice-based Learning available to learners, ranging from research to public health. Learn more about different Practice-based Learning settings and types.

Supervision

When on Practice-based Learning learners may be supervised and be assigned a mentor. There are a range of supervision models avaiable ranging from 1:1, which involves one learner with one educator at one time to blended Practice-based Learning which may offer a mix of virtual and face-to-face Practice-based Learning.

Digital Practice-based Learning

Government bodies across the UK, through the production of health and wellbeing strategies are highlighting the need to increase the use of digital-enabled care within healthcare and wider systems. A growing number of dietetic services are being supported digitally to deliver care to service users.

Although digital-enabled care can improve services and make them more sustainable, it has the potential to create a skills gap in the workforce.

Digital Practice-based Learning means that learners can develop the skills they need to manage remote service user care platforms and other digital appliances.
