Dietetic Support Workforce: Enhancing Communication Skills in Practice

This one-day course is aimed at the dietetic support workforce working in a variety of settings, including acute, community, and mental health/learning disabilities. The course is suitable for those new in post and equally as a useful update for those with some previous knowledge and experience. The interactive day will cover the importance of good communication including the significance of effective listening skills, and the impact of poor communication. It will provide an introduction to motivating and supporting behaviour change and provide an opportunity to improve and develop skills and competencies in specific areas of practice such as one-to-one patient consultations.

Aim

The aim of this one-day course is to facilitate participants to:

  • Enhance their understanding of the importance of good communication skills in the workplace.
  • Enhance their communication skills to motivate and support health-related behaviour change.
  • Practice some communication skills relevant to the role of participants working in the dietetic workforce

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the one-day course you will be able to:

  • Describe why good communication skills are so important in the workplace.
  • Recognise the impact of poor communication and/or listening skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of both attending behaviour and active listening skills.
  • Explain what health-related behaviour change is, and list four factors that influence it.
  • Demonstrate skills which enhance patient motivation for behaviour change in the context of one-to-one patient consultations.
  • Reflect on your own skills and identify any areas for further skill development.
