Consolidating Dietetic Practice in Diabetes

Aim

This course will build on existing skills and knowledge in relation to nutritional recommendations for diabetes and explores the application of theory to practice. 

It discusses current Diabetes UK evidence based nutritional guidelines for diabetes and uses case studies to consolidate dietetic practice. 

It discusses current oral and injectable anti- hyperglycaemic medications and their dietary implications. 

This course introduces carbohydrate counting, although is covered in much greater depth in the Advanced Practice in Diabetes course.

The course will be suitable for dietitians who wish to increase their general diabetes knowledge with a view to begin practicing at specialist level e.g. Enhanced Level as per the BDA and Diabetes competency document guidelines

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course delegates will:

  • Be familiar with national dietary guidelines (Diabetes UK dietary guidelines) and able to list the recommendations.
  • Be knowledgeable about current antihyperglycaemic medications (non-insulin and insulin) and understand the dietary implications of the respective drug’s action
  • Be aware of various dietary approaches such as the Mediterranean diet, low carbohydrate diets, and very low-calorie diets, and the evidence for their use in type 2 diabetes.
  • Be aware of the definition of diabetes remission and understand the current evidence for remission
  • Understand carbohydrate awareness and how to relay the message to people with diabetes
  • Understand carbohydrate counting and the different methods for counting carbohydrates
  • Be aware of the benefits of regular physical for people with diabetes
  • Be able to translate theory into practice in a variety of clinical scenarios
  • Reflect on current practice and identify strategies for increasing knowledge and skills
