Join us for an engaging online study day exploring the power of collaboration in mental health dietetics! This event welcomes expertise from many organisations who are important for our professional, bringing together dietitians, multidisciplinary professionals, and lived experience perspectives to discuss how we can work more effectively in challenging times.

Whether you're new to mental health dietetics or an experienced dietitian, our study day offers the opportunity to gain knowledge and updates in best practice across a range of specialisms.

  • Amy Pratt presenting on 'Launch of the new supplement to the BDA Nutrition & Hydration Digest: Nutrition & hydration in mental health and learning disability inpatient settings'

Session overview - An introduction to the new guidance and how clinical and catering teams can work together to improve inpatient care.

About Amy - Amy is Principal Dietitian at an NHS mental health and learning disabilities trust in Yorkshire, as well as Clinical Leader at the BDA and a committee member of the BDA Food Services Specialist Group. She has recently written a supplement to the BDA Nutrition & Hydration Digest which provides guidance for catering in mental health and learning disability inpatient settings.

Session overview - Dietitians empower, inspire and provide support and clarity to patients who can’t see a way out of the harsh grip of an eating disorder. I hope to share my lived experience to help give you an insight into a patient’s perspective and what you can do to as dietitians to make this difference and give your patients the confidence to let go, relinquish control and break rules.

About Helen - Helen is a second year medical student but has spent most of her teenage years and early adulthood battling anorexia. She now uses her experience to work with the NHS Executive, health boards and Welsh government to help raise awareness, to better service provision for others living with eating disorders.

Session overview - Naomi shares her experiences of trialling innovative approaches to supporting children living with obesity. She details her project and offers practical suggestions for embedding arts engagement when supporting children and young people with complex health presentations.

About Naomi - Naomi is a paediatric dietitian with 5 years' experience working across allergy, neuromuscular rehab, clinical obesity and endocrinology. Naomi brings a unique approach to dietetics by blending evidence-based science with creative practise, through co-designing projects with patients, artists and clinicians.

  • Pete Turner presenting on 'BAPEN Position Statement on Electrolyte and Vitamin Replacement in Adult Patients with Severe Malnutrition, including those with Eating Disorders and other Related Conditions'

Session overview - This session will provide an overview of the new BAPEN Position Statement on Electrolyte and Vitamin Replacement in Adult Patients with Severe Malnutrition, including those with Eating Disorders. Pete will highlight key recommendations, including electrolyte management to reduce complications including re-feeding syndrome.

About Pete - Pete Turner qualified as dietitian in 1990. He worked in Liverpool for over 20 years specialising on parenteral nutrition and ICU before taking up his current post as nutrition support clinical specialist at the Ulster Hospital in May 2016.

  • Umairah Malik presenting on 'There's no place like home: intensive community and day treatments for eating disorders'

Session overview - This session will provide an overview of Beat’s report on intensive community and day treatments for eating disorders, highlighting their benefits and availability alongside presenting a dietetics perspective within a service.

About Umairah - Umairah is the Clinical and Co-production Manager at Beat, leading efforts to ensure the charity’s work is informed by clinical expertise, lived experience, and research. She also manages work to ensure people receive the treatment and information that guidelines say they are entitled to, and on a campaign to increase the provision of intensive community and day treatments for eating disorders.

Most session slides and recordings will be available to ticket purchasers after the event and will be sent to attendees via the email they registered with. However, recordings will not be available for purchase after the event, so be sure to secure your ticket in advance to gain access.

Certificates of attendance will also be sent to all attendees after the event.
