Join us for a day of networking, Forensic specific CPD, interactive workshops and case discussions

Topics include:

  • Nutritional screening (SANSI) and scoring Dietetic referrals
  • Becoming a Dysphagia practitioner as a Specialist Dietitian
  • Dietetic role in; prison, community and inpatient settings

Speakers

  • Bethan Leach, Regional dietitian for Thames Valley Prisons, Practice Plus Group will present dietetics in prison with Claire Hallam.

About Bethan - In her current role in Health in Justice she is passionate about exploring food provision, food choice and eating behaviours to better understand and improve dietary intake in an already vulnerable population. Before starting this post in 2009, she was Senior Lecturer in Dietetics at Coventry University and spent six years working in various specialties within NHS Trusts.

  • Claire Hallam, Regional dietitian for London prisons, Practice Plus Group will present dietetics in prison with Bethan Leach.

About Claire - Prior to working in the prison service she worked as an acute dietitian in hospitals, a catering dietitian at a mental healthcare trust and a community gastro dietitian. In her current role she sees patients during clinic times and regularly run group education sessions about different health conditions common among the population such as T2DM and cardiovascular disease. She is also very involved in working with prison governors and catering teams to try to improve the nutritional aspect of the meals and to try to get more healthy foods into the canteens for them to purchase.

  • Frances Waddell, Scottish representative Lead Dietitian, The State Hospital will present dietetics in high secure care.

Frances will discuss what are the challenges in high secure care? what do we offer as a service?

About Frances - Frances has been lead Dietitian at TSH for around 17 years, she has previous experience in community rehab and acute care settings.  In addition to her forensic role she is practice education lead for the AHP’s at TSH too. 

  • Emma Cooper, Specialist Forensic Community Dietitian, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Committee Chair will present dietetics in a forensic community service.

Emma will cover what does the role involve? what are the challenges? what do we offer as a service?

About Emma - Emma has worked in mental health for over 10 years. Working on inpatient wards covering general Mental health, Personality disorder, Autism and Learning Disability. Emma worked across Medium secure, low secure, locked and rehab wards. Emma now works for Derbyshire Community Forensic Mental health team. This has provided a valuable insight into how people adjust from prolonged inpatient admissions to living in the community and the impact this can have on their knowledge, skills, nutritional intake and overall health.

  • Beena Patel, Dietitian, St Andrew’s Healthcare will present Nutritional Screening (SANSI) – screening, referral criteria and triaging at St Andrew’s Healthcare.

A brief overview of the SANSI nutritional screening tool and how the Dietetic team at St Andrew’s Healthcare have used this in conjunction with the St George’s University Hospital Universal Dietetic Patient Complexity Tool (UDPCT), in order to screen and triage referrals.

About Beena, Dietitian working with adults and adolescents across specialist locked, low and medium secure mental health services at St Andrew’s Healthcare. St Andrew’s Healthcare also created the (validated) SANSI nutritional screening tool and she is keen to share her experience using it in the MH setting!  She is also the Secretary of the BDA CAMHS sub-group.

Garreth Burke, Forensic Dietitian, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Committee member - Treasurer will present Use of Tirzepatide (Medication for the treatment of Diabetes and Obesity)

This session will be a case study. The person has a Diagnosis of Personality Disorder, Type 2 Diabetes and a BMI over 60kg/m2. The first person within the service to be started on Tirzepatide.

About Garreth - Forensic dietitian working across Oxford, Aylesbury & Milton Keynes, he is a committee member for the Forensics Subgroup with the role of treasurer.
