Representing Diabetes in The National Framework Supporting Equality in Schools with Adele Swart & Sam Costello
About Adele - Adele Swart is a Specialist Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian with experience in clinical practice, leadership, and research. As the Dietetic Lead for the South East Coast East network, Adele has contributed to paediatric diabetes care and has previously served on the BDA Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Group (PDSG). She is currently a dietetic representative on the National Type 2 Diabetes group and the National Type 1 Diabetes Education (T1DE) group.
Adele is involved in the National Network Aim 1, supporting young people in schools through projects such as the Schools E-Learning Package. She works across the Lewisham and Dartford NHS Trusts, contributing to structured carbohydrate counting education and multidisciplinary diabetes management.
Her contributions to research involvement includes coeliac screening and low-carbohydrate diet projects, which have been presented at conferences like ISPAD and Diabetes UK. Adele is committed to contributing to improvements in paediatric diabetes care both regionally and nationally.

About Michelle - Michelle is a Healthy Schools Officer for Public Health in West Northamptonshire. Having previously worked as a teacher for nine years, she brings a unique understanding of the challenges faced by young people in schools.
Michelle has lived with type 1 diabetes for 21 years and is particularly passionate about supporting children and young people with the condition. In addition to her public health role, Michelle is leading a project which aims to amplify the voices of children with type 1 diabetes, through anonymous surveys and 1:1 / small group focus groups.
The project focuses on raising awareness and advocating for the inclusion of their experiences, ensuring their needs are addressed both within the school environment and in their everyday live
Catering for pupils with Type 1 Diabetes in Schools, with Megan Waring.
About Megan - she is a Registered Public Health Nutritionist and is Director of Nutrition at Caterlink, a specialist catering company in the education sector. Caterlink provide catering for around 1400 sites daily, serving over 60 million meals per year to pupils in early years settings, primary and secondary schools and colleges. Megan and her team are responsible for ensuring that menus and recipes are produced in line with School Food Standards, managing special diets and allergies, and undertaking public health projects such as sugar and salt reduction.
The development of accurate carbohydrate counted menus for primary school meals in Wales with Gwawr James, National Dietitian for Special Diets in Schools, WLGA (Welsh Local Government Association).

About Raphella - Raphaella has recently become Chief Dietitian at Dorset County Hospital but has worked in several hospitals across the South West prior to that specialising in the care of children and young people with diabetes. Raphaella has been involved with the Paeds-DSG group for nearly ten years in various roles and really would value people coming forward to take part and share their expertise too! The more representation we have from different centres across the UK, the more useful our group will be for our members.

The role of the Dietetic Assistant Practitioner in Paediatric Diabetes, Michelle Teare Dietetic Assistant Practitioner East Lancashire Teaching Hospital.
Michelle's presentation aims to highlight her role within the Paediatric Diabetes team and how she support's colleagues, particularly our 2 specialist Diabetes Dietitians. It will provide specific details about how Michelle helps patients manage their Diabetes in school and school staff members feel more confident about managing Diabetes in relation to school food provision.
About Michelle - she graduated in 1998 following a Food and Nutrition degree, she worked in London at MAFF (formerly the Ministry of Fisheries and Food – now the FSA). However, she wanted to follow her passion for helping young people to improve their nutrition, so she started her health promotion/improvement career in 2000 at City & Hackney PCT as a Health Promotion Advisor (Young People and CVD) where she was the lead in the pilot for the School Fruit Scheme. Michelle has since worked for other Trusts in Health Improvement with young people and families around fussy eating, cooking healthy on a budget and healthy lifestyles before settling in my current role which combines both clinical and preventative work.

About John - John is dedicated to empowering individuals with diabetes to confidently manage their health. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, John co-developed an award-winning virtual diabetes education curriculum for schools, reducing repetitive training and allowing more focus on CGM and AID onboarding.

Classroom Teacher Lived Experience with Lauren Senior, Teacher of English, Academies Enterprise Trust
Lauren will be talking about how classroom teachers can help to support students with Type 1 Diabetes, as well as her own experience as a Teacher with the condition.
About Lauren - She has been a secondary school English Teacher teaching ages 11 to 16 since September 2021. She completed her training with the charity Teach First and continues to advocate for students from disadvantaged communities. She is also a volunteer with Diabetes UK and helped at the Scotland Summer Camp this August.
